Lithuania’s Prime Minister is against a referendum on banning the sale of land in the country to foreigners

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has called the call for a referendum on the ban of the sale of land to foreigners "speculation before the election," and added that it is contrary to EU law. According to the prime minister, foreigners who wanted to buy land in Lithuania have already successfully done so.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Vigilijus Jukna laments the fact that due to late safeguards against it foreigners have already acquired much land in the country through intermediaries and artificially created companies.
