By 2020, four Lithuanian cities must change the method of production of heat to fit European standards

According to the European Commission's Directive on industrial emissions, which is aimed at exchanging the use of natural gas for bio-fuels, Vilnius, Kaunas, Alytus and Marijampolėje must renovate six heat production facilities-thermal power plants or boilers. If they fail to comply with the requirements by the deadline, the heat supply companies face fines or complete shutdown of heat-generating equipment.
